Description
The Comète 40th is a bookshelf speaker from Triangle, designed as an anniversary edition drawing on the technical developments made for the Antal model. It is a two-way Bass Reflex system with front-firing port, intended for a stereo system in a moderately sized room.
The tweeter features a composite dome in anodised magnesium, a material chosen for its balance of lightness and rigidity, with a high sensitivity that limits distortion. The mid-woofer uses a 16.5 cm natural cellulose pulp diaphragm, paired with a motor and small-roll surrounds designed to cover a wide frequency range. The 90 dB sensitivity and nominal impedance of 8 ohms (4.2 ohms minimum) allow operation with moderately powerful amplifiers. The stated frequency response, from 47 Hz to 22,000 Hz at plus or minus 3 dB, covers most of the audible spectrum with a bass foundation consistent with the cabinet's size.

What to check before buying used
The mid-woofer's surround deserves close inspection: the foam or rubber can harden or crack over time, which affects the low-frequency performance. Also check the condition of the tweeter's magnesium dome, which is susceptible to impacts and fingerprints despite its rigidity. Finally, inspect the cabinet's veneer and edges, as well as the connection terminals at the rear, for any chips, lifting, or signs of oxidation.
