Description
The Lunar 3 is a manual turntable designed by Triangle in collaboration with Pro-Ject, who handles its assembly in Europe. It allows playback of 33, 45 and 78 rpm records, with two belts supplied to cover these different speeds.
It stands out for its Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, fitted at the factory as standard on a straight 21.5 cm carbon tonearm, known for being lightweight and rigid. This pre-set factory fitting means the user does not need to calibrate the cartridge themselves. Drive is by belt, with electronic speed control, an arrangement designed to limit rotational irregularities. The platter is made of high-density MDF, a material chosen for its mass and stability.
The turntable incorporates a phono preamplifier that can be activated as required. This feature allows it to be connected directly to a Line input on a conventional amplifier, but also to a pair of active speakers or to a Stereo Hub 2, without the need for a separate phono preamplifier.
This type of turntable is suited both to a first serious vinyl setup and as an upgrade for an existing hi-fi system, in a configuration where ease of connection matters as much as playback quality. Operation remains manual, meaning the user must lift and move the tonearm themselves.

What to check before buying used
On the used market, a few points deserve particular attention with this model. The condition of the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge should be checked, especially the stylus, which wears over time and directly affects sound quality. The drive belt, a typical wear item on a turntable with this type of transmission, can stretch or crack over the years. It is also worth checking that the built-in phono preamplifier and its activation switch work properly, along with the general condition of the carbon tonearm, which is sensitive to knocks despite its rigidity.
