The Magellan Cello 40TH Edition is a compact 3-way floorstanding speaker measuring 1138 mm in height, designed by Triangle to bring the performance of the Magellan Grand Concert range into a more reasonable format. It is set up in stereo configuration for demanding musical listening in a living room.
The TZ2900PM horn-loaded tweeter uses a magnesium alloy dome paired with a phase plug, a combination designed to linearise the frequency response and limit high-frequency directivity off the listening axis. A cover placed behind the motor reduces reflection of rear waves onto the dome, which limits distortion in the tweeter's lower crossover zone. The 16 cm midrange driver uses a pure cellulose fibre membrane with a small-fold suspension, designed to reproduce vocals with neutrality. The two 16 cm woofers rely on Sandwich Verre Alvéolaire technology: a double glass fibre sheet with an internal honeycomb structure made of cellulose pulp, which optimises the mass, damping and stiffness ratio of the moving assembly and allows large excursions without deformation. With a sensitivity of 90 dB, a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 3 ohms) and a power handling of 40 to 300 W, the Cello covers a frequency range of 35 to 30000 Hz.

What to check before buying used
On this model, the cellulose fibre midrange membranes and small-fold suspensions deserve careful visual inspection: check for any tears, sagging or signs of moisture. Also check the integrity of the honeycomb glass fibre sandwich woofer units, which are stiffer but sensitive to impacts on the membrane edges. A test at low power followed by a higher level allows you to confirm the absence of any unwanted noise or distortion, particularly on the horn-loaded tweeter, whose magnesium dome can deform if struck.
