Triangle Signature Delta

The Signature Delta occupies the top position in Triangle's Signature range. It is a floorstanding speaker, that is to say a model that stands on the floor without requiring a stand, designed to form a complete stereo system with an amplifier and a source. It served as the starting point for the manufacturer's work on this range, with subsequent models derived from it.

Its architecture is based on three ways: the bass, midrange and treble are each handled by separate transducers, with each one working within the portion of the spectrum for which it has been designed. This division avoids asking a single driver to cover too wide a range, which generally results in better clarity in the midrange register, where voices and most instruments sit.

The loading is of the bass-reflex type: the cabinet is tuned by means of a port that makes use of the rear radiation from the woofer. This principle allows for lower extension in the spectrum than a sealed cabinet of comparable volume, but it makes the speaker sensitive to its immediate surroundings. Distance from the rear wall, adjusted by ear, determines the tonal balance achieved in the room.

This Delta is aimed at a listener with a listening room large enough to allow a three-way floorstanding speaker to breathe, and willing to devote time to speaker placement and toe-in towards the listening position. It suits a stationary stereo hi-fi setup, in which the speakers remain in place and are paired with amplification of consistent quality.

When buying used, a few checks are specific to this type of speaker:

• the condition of the woofer and midrange surrounds, which deform or crack over the years;
• the tweeter dome, to be examined for dents or perforation;
• the internal passive crossover, whose capacitors age and can alter the balance between the drive units;
• the terminals and internal connectors, prone to oxidation and loosening;
• the cabinet and the bass-reflex port, to be checked for veneer lifting, swelling or a worn seal.

A comparative listening test of the two speakers in a pair, channel by channel, remains the most revealing check: a difference in tone or level between them often points to a faulty driver or crossover.
