Description
The Tales 340 is an active subwoofer from Triangle, designed to extend the low-frequency register of a speaker system downwards. It fits equally well within a stereo system or at the heart of a multichannel home cinema installation, and is particularly suited to those building their first hi-fi-oriented setup.
Its architecture is built around a 25 cm long-throw driver, a design that allows the diaphragm to move a significant volume of air and thus reproduce the lowest frequencies with substance. It is driven by a class D amplifier rated at 200 W RMS, with a peak reserve of 350 W: enough to handle the sudden transients of a soundtrack without the bass collapsing.

The cabinet has a understated presentation, without any particular ornamentation, which makes it easier to integrate into a living room where the unit is often placed on the floor, close to a wall or a piece of furniture. This type of subwoofer suits rooms of typical size, as a complement to compact or floorstanding speakers lacking bass extension, or connected to the LFE channel of a home cinema amplifier.

What to check before buying used
When buying a used amplified subwoofer, attention should first be paid to the driver: the surround and dust cap must be free of tears or delamination, as a long-throw 25 cm driver places heavy demands on these parts. Next, check the amplification module, the part most prone to ageing: no hum at idle, no unexpected cut-outs, and effective operation of the automatic standby function, whose signal-detection circuit can become temperamental over time. The level and crossover frequency potentiometers should be turned through their full range to detect any crackling, as should the input terminals, often worn by repeated connections. Finally, an inspection of the cabinet's corners and rear panel gives an indication of the handling a heavy, bulky unit has undergone.
