Description
The MD108T Signature Edition is a tube FM tuner designed by Magnum Dynalab, sharing the same internal architecture as the brand's MD109 tuner. It is aimed at high-fidelity FM radio enthusiasts seeking a reproduction close to the direct output of a tube stage, with a build quality geared towards audiophile use.
The audio board of this model is based on the TRACC MKII circuit, developed over ten years by Zdenko Zivkovic. It incorporates Teflon bypass capacitors, a fully balanced output, as well as onboard trimmers allowing the tube pairing to be adjusted by ear, channel by channel. The tubes fitted are Premium grade, Cryo-treated, matched tubes, paired with equally matched, higher-grade resistors. Both the audio board and the power supply board use a 0.093-inch thick substrate, with traces and contacts fully gold-plated, both on the surface and within the circuit. The output connectors use WBT RCAs. All boards are hand-assembled and hand-soldered.
This tuner is intended for a user already equipped with a high-end system, wishing to add an FM source capable of matching the refinement of the other links in their chain. The ability to recalibrate the balance of both channels via the onboard trimmers makes it an appliance designed to be adjusted and maintained over time, rather than used as-is without follow-up.
What to check before buying used
The reliability of the tuner depends on the condition of the tubes: check that they show no microphonics or background noise after a long period of disuse, and that the pairing set via the trimmers remains stable channel by channel. Inspect the WBT RCA connectors and the gold-plated traces on the TRACC MKII board, which are sensitive to oxidation marks if stored in a humid environment. A warm-up period before use is still required to regain the sonic stability characteristic of the tube stage.
