Description
The MicroVee X is an amplified subwoofer whose main selling point lies in its footprint: 22.9 x 22.9 x 24.4 cm and 9.07 kg on the scale. Velodyne Acoustics presents it as the smallest format in its catalogue, designed to add bass reinforcement to a music system or a home cinema setup without taking up the space of a traditional subwoofer.
The acoustic architecture explains how such a small volume manages to reach down to 38 Hz at plus or minus 3 dB. An active 6.5-inch driver with an anodised aluminium cone, front-mounted and fitted with a 2-inch dual-layer voice coil, works alongside two 6.5-inch passive radiators placed on the sides. These unpowered membranes extend the response in the lower part of the spectrum by harnessing the enclosure's internal energy, a classic solution when the available volume rules out a sufficiently long tuned port.
Amplification comes from a digital Class D stage fitted with the brand's patented ERS (Energy Recovery System), rated at 1000 watts RMS and 2000 watts of dynamic power, with a typical total harmonic distortion below 1%. An anti-clipping circuit works to contain distortion when the amplifier is pushed to its limits, which makes sense on a compact subwoofer often driven close to its ceiling.

The brand's own Subwoofer Direct function bypasses the internal filter when crossover setting is already handled upstream by a processor: this avoids stacking two filtering stages and hollowing out the crossover zone with the main speakers.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, a few checks are worth making on this type of unit. The side-mounted passive radiators undergo strong excursions: check the condition of their suspensions, the absence of tearing or hardening, and make sure no rubbing can be heard at sustained volume on prolonged low notes. On the active driver, the aluminium cone should show no dents or marks around the voice coil. The Class D stage and its power supply deserve an extended listening test: hum at idle, unwanted standby switching or cutting out under heavy load all point to worn electronics. Finally, test each input and output one by one, particularly the mini-jack and speaker-level connections, which are often less used and therefore rarely checked by the previous owner, as well as the full travel of the crossover frequency potentiometer and the phase switch.
