The Velodyne MiniVee X is a small-format active subwoofer, built on a sealed enclosure internally reinforced to limit panel resonance. Its configuration pairs a front-mounted active 8-inch driver with an 8-inch passive radiator mounted on the side, an architecture that delivers extended bass without requiring a large enclosure volume. A measurement microphone and the manufacturer's own app provide automatic correction of the in-room response.
The stated bandwidth spans 32 to 180 Hz at ± 3 dB, placing the low-end extension well below that of typical compact speakers. The amplification, rated at 350 W RMS and 800 W dynamic power, therefore has headroom for soundtrack transients without clipping, with typical distortion below 0.5%. What to check before buying used
The side-mounted passive radiator deserves close inspection: its suspension works hard through excursion, and a pinched, detached or visibly sagging membrane indicates prolonged use at high volume. On the active driver, a slightly dented aluminium cone doesn't always affect the sound but can signal an impact. Test the inputs one by one, RCA, XLR, mini-jack and speaker-level terminals, as well as the level and crossover frequency potentiometers and the phase switch, a crackling sound when adjusting these indicates oxidised contacts. Finally, check that the measurement microphone is included with the subwoofer and that the automatic correction runs through to completion from the app.
