Description
The Premium HD from Viard Audio Design is a speaker cable designed to connect an amplifier to its speakers. It sits in the upper part of the French manufacturer's catalogue and is aimed at installations where cabling is regarded as a component of the system in its own right, rather than a mere connection accessory.
Its design is based on pure copper strands made up of extra-fine wires. This multiplication of small-gauge conductors, rather than a solid wire, goes hand in hand with the great flexibility claimed for this cable: it allows for tight bend radii, routing along skirting boards, and connection to hard-to-reach terminals without mechanical stress on the amplifier's or speakers' connectors.
The second point highlighted is the low capacitance of the cable. On a speaker line, the geometry of the cable and the spacing of the conductors determine this value; keeping it low avoids imposing an additional reactive load on the output stage, which is particularly appreciated by certain amplifiers, notably those with high feedback or wide bandwidth.
This type of cable naturally finds its place in a domestic stereo system where the amplifier and speakers are already of a good standard, and where the aim is not to bottleneck the connection between the two. What to check before buying used
When buying used, attention should be paid to points specific to speaker cables. Check the condition of the terminations: spades or banana plugs that are not loose, no greenish oxidation or blackening on exposed copper, and intact soldering or crimping. Inspect the sheath along its entire length for cuts, crushing or pinching caused by passing under a piece of furniture, which can affect fine strands. Finally, make sure both cables in the pair are of identical length and that polarity markings remain legible from end to end, as a phase inversion between the two channels is immediately audible in the stereo image.
