Description
The HD20 is a digital coaxial cable from the French brand Viard Audio, designed to connect a digital transport (CD player, network player, tuner) to a converter or amplifier fitted with an S/PDIF input. Terminated with RCA connectors, it provides the digital link between two components in a hi-fi or home cinema system.
Its construction is based on a 75 Ω impedance, a value compliant with the S/PDIF standard and ensuring correct line matching to limit signal reflections. The multi-strand conductors combine Cu-VHQ copper and silver, two materials known for their conductivity, while a copper-silver braided shield protects the signal from surrounding electromagnetic interference.
The cable incorporates a Teflon (PTFE) dielectric, an insulating material valued for its stability, beneath a 12 mm diameter silicone jacket. Its electrical values are specified by the manufacturer: a capacitance of 80 pF/m and an inductance of 0.4 µH/m, two parameters that contribute to the quality of digital signal transmission along the length of the cable.
The RCA connectors are gold-plated, a treatment that limits contact oxidation and promotes a stable connection over time. This model is offered in a one-metre length.

What to check before buying used
The quality of the digital link mainly depends on the condition of the RCA connectors: a weakened solder joint or gold plating scratched by repeated insertions can cause synchronisation errors or loss of S/PDIF signal. It is also worth checking that the silicone jacket shows no cuts or crushing, particularly near the plugs, and that the braided shield has not been bent at a sharp angle, which weakens its electrical continuity over time.
