Description
The CD-200 is a hybrid CD player from Vincent, designed in a compact format to pair naturally with an amplifier from the same range. It combines a modern digital architecture with a tube output stage, a configuration that aims to bring together digital precision and the characteristic grain of tube amplification.
Disc playback relies on a Sanyo laser unit paired with a Philips servo board, controlled by in-house developed playback software. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a Burr-Brown PCM1796 chip, with sampling up to 24 bits / 192 kHz. The analogue signal then passes through a 6N2 tube which colours the sound, with each channel benefiting from independent filtering, amplification and buffering. In terms of performance, the unit offers a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+/- 1 dB), harmonic distortion below 0.005%, a signal-to-noise ratio above 93 dB and a dynamic range above 100 dB, with channel separation above 80 dB.
The headphone output, with an impedance of 100 ohms, delivers 160 mW into 300 ohms, allowing headphone listening directly from the unit. Connectivity includes an RCA stereo output, an optical output, a coaxial output and a 3.5 mm jack output, complemented by a 6.3 mm jack input and a 3.5 mm jack input for headphones.

What to check before buying used
The tray and mechanism of the Sanyo optical block deserve a thorough playback test, including with a burned CD, to rule out any skipping or read failures linked to laser wear. The 6N2 tube is a consumable: check that it is neither microphonic nor noisy, bearing in mind it will need replacing one day without this reflecting a fault with the unit. A check of the output sockets and internal connectors is also worthwhile, as these are the parts most exposed to repeated handling.
