Description
The Vincent CD-S7 DAC is a CD player with integrated digital-to-analogue conversion, designed around a hybrid architecture combining solid-state electronics and a valve output stage. It follows on from the CD-S6 Mk, from which it inherits the exterior styling while advancing the internal engineering.
The unit is built around an output stage operating in Class A in its linear section, powered by an oversized power supply. The valves handle signal amplification, which has a direct bearing on the sound texture: bass gains presence, string and piano timbres take on more body, and listening benefits from a more pronounced sense of space and depth.

What to check before buying used
The CD drawer deserves close attention on ejection and closing: a worn mechanism may struggle to load the disc or produce an abnormal noise. The lens in the optical assembly, worked hard by years of playback, may see its laser weaken, causing skipping or read errors on certain discs. The valves in the output stage are consumables that should be checked: look out for microphonics (a metallic resonance when the chassis is touched) or premature wear that could alter the warm timbre characteristic of this hybrid architecture.
