Description
The Vincent SA-32 is a valve preamplifier designed to be inserted between one or more sources and a power amplifier, in order to handle input selection and volume control. It retains the general design of its predecessor while benefiting from reworked circuitry and additional features.
The connectivity has been expanded: in addition to the classic RCA input-output circuit, the unit now also features a balanced XLR input-output circuit, with an XLR cable supplied. This balanced connection helps limit interference over long cable runs, an advantage for installations where the preamplifier is positioned some distance from the power amplifier.
The Loudness function of the previous model has been replaced by a Gain function, activated via a switch on the front panel, which lowers the gain by 8 dB. This feature allows the SA-32 to be paired with high-gain amplifiers without risk of premature signal saturation.
On the internal amplification side, the SA-32 uses four 6N16-type valves, compared with two on its predecessor: two valves at the input stage and two more on the output stage, after the equaliser adjustment circuit. This architecture aims for a wide and precise soundstage, with a dynamic range and musicality said to be improved compared with the earlier version.

What to check before buying used
On this valve preamplifier, check the condition of the four 6N16 valves: microphony, hum or loss of gain on one channel indicate worn valves that will need to be re-matched. Test the operation of the front-panel Gain switch and check for the absence of crackling on the volume potentiometer when turning it. Also check that the RCA and XLR outputs deliver a clean, balanced signal, free from hiss or hum caused by ageing capacitors.
