Description
The Gold Eclipse 10 is an analogue interconnect from Wireworld, designed to carry the signal between two components in a hi-fi system: a player, converter or turntable on one side, a preamplifier or integrated amplifier on the other. It is available with either Silver-Tube RCA connectors, for an unbalanced connection, or XLR, for a balanced connection, and comes in lengths of 0.5 m, 0.75 m, 1.00 m, 1.50 m and 2.00 m.
Its construction is based on four conductors, each made up of 32 individually insulated strands, solid silver being the conductive material used. This division into individually insulated strands is at the heart of the series 10 approach: compared with the Gold Eclipse 8, the number of strand groups has been doubled. Insulation uses COMPOSILEX 5 dielectric, the manufacturer's most recent generation of this material.
The effective cross-section differs depending on the chosen termination, which is worth bearing in mind when ordering. The RCA version uses 18AWG, i.e. 0.8 mm² cross-section, with silver-plated oxygen-free copper contacts. The XLR version adopts a finer 21AWG cross-section, i.e. 0.4 mm², with silver-plated copper alloy contacts. The silver plating on the contacts aims to reduce surface resistance at the point of contact, often the weak link in a connection.
This type of cable is intended for an already well-established system, where the electronics and speakers have been carefully chosen and the interconnect becomes the last parameter to adjust. The choice between RCA and XLR is primarily determined by the connectivity available on the equipment: the balanced version is worthwhile on electronics genuinely designed with balanced circuitry, or when distance and the electrical environment call for better immunity to interference.

What to check before buying used
When buying a used interconnect cable, the connectors are what matters most. Check the Silver-Tube connectors: a warped or loose RCA barrel, a marked centre pin, or a worn XLR locking tab can compromise contact. The silver plating on the contacts naturally tarnishes over time without necessarily affecting the signal, but pitting or deep blackening warrants attention. Also check for any pinching, sharp bends or crushing marks on the sheath, as a multi-strand cable of this fineness does not tolerate tight bend radii well. Finally, confirm that the length matches your requirements, as these cables are terminated at the factory and cannot be shortened.
