Description
The Yamaha A-S201 is a stereo integrated amplifier delivering 2 x 100 W of power. It serves as a central unit capable of bringing together several audio sources around a Hi-Fi system, thanks to its five available inputs.
The internal layout has been designed to shorten the audio signal path: the power supply is placed close to the amplification circuit in order to limit power loss and improve energy delivery. The earth and power supply are connected at a single point, which reduces interference and improves the signal-to-noise ratio. The Pure Direct mode allows the bass, treble and balance control circuits to be bypassed, for a purer reproduction of the signal.
The amplifier includes an MM Phono input, allowing a turntable to be connected directly without a separate phono preamplifier. The large screw terminals ensure a robust connection with speaker cables.
A power management function automatically switches the unit into standby mode after a period of inactivity adjustable to 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours, or which can be disabled. The stated standby consumption is 0.5 W.

What to check before buying used
The motorised volume potentiometer can develop crackling or a channel imbalance after many years of inactivity: testing at low and high volume levels helps detect this. Also check the MM Phono input, often little used on units sold, as well as the tightness of the screw terminals, sometimes weakened by repeated handling of speaker cables.
