Description
The Yamaha A-S301 is a stereo integrated amplifier positioned at the entry level of the brand's hi-fi range. It is built around Yamaha's cherished "Natural Sound" concept, with a circuit design intended to faithfully reproduce different types of music.
The unit benefits from Yamaha's in-house ToP-ART technology, which arranges the input and output circuits according to a direct symmetrical design: the left and right channels are laid out identically and symmetrically, which limits processing discrepancies between the two channels and contributes to sonic coherence. This architecture is accompanied by ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) technology, which aims to strengthen vibration damping and chassis rigidity, two factors that influence the neutrality of the reproduced sound.
Pure Direct mode allows the bass, treble and balance control circuits to be bypassed: the signal then follows a shorter path, which can result in better sonic definition without loss of power. Conversely, the Loudness function, accessible on the front panel, compensates for the reduced perception of low and high frequencies at low listening volumes, independently of the usual volume control.
In terms of connectivity, the A-S301 offers optical and coaxial digital inputs, suited respectively to receiving sound from a television and a Blu-ray player, with fully digital signal processing. It can also accommodate the YBA-11 Bluetooth accessory, powered via a USB socket on the rear of the unit, to wirelessly stream music from a compatible smartphone, tablet or computer, with aptX encoding to preserve audio quality.

What to check before buying used
On the A-S301, check that the protection relays operate correctly at switch-on and that there is no crackling or unexpected volume cut-out, a common symptom of contact issues. Test each potentiometer (volume, balance, tone) for crackling when moved, which indicates wear or oxidation requiring cleaning. Also check that the input selectors and Pure Direct mode switch cleanly, and that there is no humming that might indicate ageing capacitors.
