Description
The Yamaha A-S701 is a stereo integrated amplifier designed to drive a pair of speakers in a domestic hi-fi system. It combines a classic analogue power section with digital inputs, allowing a turntable as well as a television or a Blu-ray player to be connected to a single unit.
The stated power output is 2 x 100 watts, with harmonic distortion measured at 0.025% on the phono input and 0.015% on the CD input. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 99 dB in Pure Direct mode on the CD input, against 82 dB on the phono input, reflecting a more favourable noise floor on digital sources. Pure Direct mode allows the tone and balance circuits to be bypassed in order to shorten the audio signal path. The unit also incorporates a 24-bit/192 kHz PCM DAC, accessible via its optical and coaxial digital inputs, as well as a Top-Art chassis designed to limit mechanical resonance.
In terms of connectivity, the A-S701 offers an MM cartridge-compatible phono input, six stereo RCA inputs, two stereo RCA line outputs, a mono pre-out output, as well as a front-panel headphone output in 6.35 mm jack format. It can manage two pairs of speakers (A and B) and features a front-panel Loudness control, separate from the volume control, to compensate for the perceived loss of high and low frequencies at low listening levels. The connectors and terminals are gold-plated.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is advisable to check the condition of the volume and balance potentiometers, which can develop crackling with age, as well as the proper operation of the input selection relays and the two A/B speaker outputs. Checking the phono input is also recommended, as the capacitors in this stage are among the first to age on this type of amplifier. It is also worth testing the front-panel headphone output and verifying that Pure Direct mode switches correctly.
