The GT-5000 is a turntable from Yamaha, designed in the continuity of the historic « Gigantic and Tremendous » (GT) range, renowned for its solid-wood plinths and platters intended to dampen vibrations. This model carries on this philosophy while modernising the internal mechanisms for playing vinyl records.
The tonearm is short and straight, a design that favours rigidity and lightness to improve playback precision. This simple, rigid construction makes an antiskating system unnecessary, which is generally required on other turntables. Drive is provided by a belt mechanism, specially designed to limit the influence of motor rotation and eliminate feedback, unlike the original GT concept which relied on the principle of internal mass to counter this phenomenon.
The platter, made of thick aluminium, weighs 5 kg, a substantial weight that contributes to rotational stability and playback consistency. What to check before buying used
The original cartridge and stylus should be checked first: wear or replacement with an unsuitable model noticeably affects playback. The drive belt, prone to ageing, may stretch or crack and must ensure consistent drive of the 5 kg platter. An inspection of the mounting surface and the aluminium platter is also required, as any impact or deformation may affect rotational stability. The straight tonearm, which has no antiskating, warrants a check of its joints to rule out any mechanical play.
