Description
The HA-L7A is a headphone amplifier designed by Yamaha, also integrating digital-to-analogue converter and preamplifier functions. It allows direct connection of digital or analogue sources and drives headphones with a level of control and precision close to that of home audiophile systems.
The unit relies on a patented floating balanced power amplification technology: four amplification circuits, distributed across the plus and minus sides of the left and right channels, operate independently of ground. This design ensures a perfectly symmetrical push-pull operation and allows headphones to be used without reconfiguring the amplifier between balanced and unbalanced output, while limiting the influence of external ground-related noise. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a 32-bit ES9038PRO DAC from ESS Technology, and two toroidal transformers combined with a rigid structure contribute to the reproduction of dynamic contrasts, low frequencies and the finest details. Total harmonic distortion is stated at 0.003% maximum (digital input 1 kHz, 300 mW, 32 Ω).
Connectivity includes an RCA analogue input, an optical digital input, a coaxial digital input and a type B USB input, as well as RCA and 3-pin XLR analogue preamp/line outputs. On the headphone side, the unit offers a standard 6.3 mm output, a balanced 4.4 mm output and a 4-pin XLR output.
This type of amplifier is aimed at listeners equipped with demanding hi-fi headphones, seeking a single digital and analogue source capable of serving both as a headphone amplifier and as a preamplifier for an existing system, with fine handling of high-resolution PCM and DSD formats.

What to check before buying used
On this type of amplifier with multiple outputs, it is advisable to test the 6.3 mm, balanced 4.4 mm and 4-pin XLR headphone outputs in turn to check for any crackling or intermittent contact, particularly on the more fragile balanced connections. The optical, coaxial and USB digital inputs should also be checked one by one, as should the RCA and XLR preamp outputs, to ensure that each circuit functions correctly after several years of use.
