The NS-600A is a 3-way bass-reflex bookshelf speaker designed by Yamaha. It combines a dual 16 cm woofer, an 8 cm dome midrange and a 3 cm dome tweeter, for sound reproduction split across three distinct filters.
Its frequency response extends from 34 Hz to 65 kHz at -10 dB, and up to 100 kHz at -30 dB, reflecting broad coverage of the audible spectrum and beyond. Filtering takes place at 750 Hz and 3.5 kHz, clearly separating the bass, midrange and treble registers. With a sensitivity of 88 dB and an impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 3.5 ohms), it accepts a rated power of 60 W and can handle up to 200 W at peak, allowing it to work with amplifiers of moderate to comfortable power output.
The cabinet features a glossy lacquered finish, produced using the same process employed on Yamaha grand pianos, a technique reserved for a limited number of models in the brand's range. What to check before buying used
The surrounds of the two 16 cm woofers deserve careful checking: on a unit of this age, the surround can stiffen, crack or come away, which affects bass reproduction. It is also necessary to check for any play or rubbing noise on the dome midrange and tweeter, which are more vulnerable to knocks. Finally, the piano-style lacquered finish, prone to micro-scratches and discolouration, should be examined closely under raking light, as should the flatness of the cabinetwork.
