Description
The YH-4000 is a wired hi-fi headphone of open-back, circumaural design, conceived for refined musical reproduction rather than isolation. It is built around an orthodynamic transducer, that is to say a flat-diaphragm driver (planar magnetic), a technology different from the classic dynamic drivers found on most consumer headphones.
Its frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 70 kHz, a wide range that far exceeds the audible human spectrum and reflects the transducer's ability to reproduce deep bass nuances as well as highly extended treble. Its sensitivity of 97 dB/mW at 1 kHz and its impedance of 34 ohms at 1 kHz indicate headphones that are relatively easy to drive, without necessarily requiring a powerful headphone amplifier, although a good DAC/amp remains relevant to fully exploit a planar transducer. The weight of 320 g remains contained for this type of technology, often heavier than classic dynamic headphones.
The earpads were developed specifically for this model: the inner surface, in contact with the ear, is in artificial suede, while the outer perimeter uses soft PU leather. This combination aims to reconcile long-term comfort with the durability of the cushion.

What to check before buying used
The YH-4000's planar magnetic transducer is sensitive to shocks to the diaphragm: check for the absence of distortion or dead spots by listening at moderate volume across the whole frequency range. The synthetic suede earpads compress and crack over time, while the PU leather on the perimeter can split or peel on an older unit. Also examine the headband and the suspension forks, as well as the continuity of the cable and its connectors, classic weak points on this type of open-back headphones.
