Yamaha YH-5000SE

The YH-5000SE is Yamaha's flagship headphones: an open-back circumaural model built around orthodynamic transducers, that is, flat diaphragms with distributed magnetic drive. Unlike a conventional dynamic driver with a moving coil, this principle sets the entire surface of the diaphragm in motion, an approach Yamaha has employed since the HP-1 in the 1970s and revisits here in a completely redesigned version.

Technically, the stated bandwidth extends from 5 Hz to 70 kHz, a range that goes well beyond the audible and mainly reflects the lightness and speed of the diaphragm. Sensitivity of 98 dB/mW at 1 kHz remains comfortable for a planar design: the headphones do not necessarily require exceptional amplification, but they will benefit from a properly matched source. The weight of 320 g places the unit in the upper-mid range of open-back headphones in this category, a figure to be considered alongside the Toray Ultrasuede suede earpads, which distribute pressure around the ears.

The connectivity deserves attention, as it determines the choice of associated electronics. Two 2 m cables are supplied, both in silver-coated OFC copper, and both terminated on the headphone side by two 3.5 mm two-conductor mini-jacks, one per earcup.

This dual provision allows switching from a headphone amplifier with a traditional jack output to modern electronics fitted with a 4.4 mm balanced output, without any additional purchase. The fact that the connection is detachable on both sides also simplifies replacement should a conductor wear out.

The YH-5000SE is intended for relaxed, at-home listening in a quiet environment: the open-back design lets sound pass in both directions and immediately rules out portable use or shared spaces. It will suit a listener who already owns a headphone amplifier or a DAC with a refined headphone output, and who prioritises tonal clarity and a sense of space over sound isolation.
