The WTX 500 is a Bluetooth audio receiver designed to pick up stereo streams sent from a compatible device: computer, Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. It is not an amplifier but an adapter, designed to add Bluetooth reception to a hi-fi system that does not natively have it.
It connects via RCA line outputs, to be plugged directly into an input on a preamplifier or integrated amplifier. The source states its particular compatibility with the Advance Acoustic range, but the standardised spacing of the RCA connectors allows it to work with a wide range of electronics from other brands. If the spacing of the sockets differs from the standard, a simple RCA extension lead is enough to restore the connection.
This type of receiver is aimed at those who already own an amplifier or preamplifier without a Bluetooth input and who wish to add this function without changing their electronics. It is suited to everyday practical listening, where music is streamed from a phone or tablet to an existing system.
What to check before buying used
The Bluetooth module deserves a pairing test with a recent smartphone or tablet, as some older units lose stability when faced with current versions of Android or iOS. The RCA output sockets should be checked one by one: a loose or oxidised connector results in a silent channel or a crackling sound. The small original mains power supply, often lost during resale, is on its own essential for the receiver to function.
