Description
The WTX-Tubes from Advance Paris is a wireless audio receiver designed to turn any amplifier or hi-fi system into a quality Bluetooth source. It receives the audio signal from a smartphone, tablet or computer and outputs it via a wired connection to the existing system, without needing a cable between the source and the amplifier.
It features Bluetooth 5.0 technology compatible with aptX HD, a codec aiming for a listening quality close to that of a CD while limiting connection dropouts. The received signal can be converted by the unit's internal 24-bit / 192 kHz DAC, or transmitted as is via its digital outputs to the converter of an external amplifier, an option not commonly found on this type of receiver. The unit also stands out for its pair of built-in tubes, which brings a warm colouration to sound from digital files.
This receiver is aimed at those who already own an amplifier or hi-fi system without Bluetooth functionality, and who wish to add wireless streaming without giving up on sound quality. What to check before buying used
The two tubes housed inside are wear parts: a listening test can reveal excessive background noise or microphonics signalling that replacement will soon be needed. The Bluetooth pairing is worth checking over the actual distance to the source, as range can deteriorate with the age of the module. The digital outputs and power socket, used every time the unit is connected, also warrant a visual check of the connector.
