Description
The AK HC5 is a portable USB DAC from Astell&Kern, designed to convert and amplify sound directly from a smartphone, computer or games console. Presented in the form of a compact cable connecting a USB-C input to headphone outputs, it allows you to bypass the built-in audio conversion of a mobile device and benefit from dedicated electronics, without having to carry a separate unit.
The heart of the device relies on a dual AKM DAC, combining an AK4191EQ and an AK4499EX, capable of processing PCM streams up to 32-bit/768 kHz as well as DSD512. Two headphone outputs are available, in 3.5 mm jack and balanced 4.4 mm jack, with maximum output voltages of 2.5 VRMS and 5 VRMS respectively with no load, allowing the use of more current-demanding headphones. A 1.62-inch OLED screen displays playback information and the volume control operates over 150 levels, for fine adjustment. The connecting cable is doubly shielded to limit electrical interference.
Compatible with the UAC 2.0 and UAC 1.0 standards, the AK HC5 connects to a computer as well as to consoles such as the PlayStation or the Nintendo Switch in UAC 1.0 mode, extending its use beyond simple music listening.
This format is aimed at a mobile user who wants to improve the sound quality of their smartphone or console without the bulk of a desktop DAC, while keeping a well-made wired headphone or in-ear set. The aluminium chassis and weight of 46 g make it an accessory designed to stay permanently connected to the source device.

What to check before buying used
The USB-C input connector is a wear point to check first, as are the 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm jack sockets, which must maintain a firm contact without any loose connection or crackling. The connecting cable, doubly shielded, deserves a visual inspection along its entire length to detect any cracked sheathing or weakened flex point. Also check the OLED screen for scratches or dead pixels, as well as the volume wheel, which should remain smooth across its 150 steps without any jerkiness.
