Description
The Naim NAIT 5i is a stereo integrated amplifier from Naim Audio, a British manufacturer renowned for its NAIT integrated amplifier line launched in 1983. This unit handles both amplification and source switching for a hi-fi system on its own, without requiring a separate power amplifier stage.
It delivers a power output of 2 x 50 W into 8 ohms, sufficient to drive speakers of average sensitivity in a medium-sized living room. Input sensitivity is 225 mV on line level, a figure that determines the signal level required from a source to achieve full power output.
In terms of connectivity, the NAIT 5i offers four analogue inputs in DIN and RCA format, allowing several sources to be connected simultaneously: CD player, tuner, turntable via an external phono preamplifier, or any other line-output device.
This model is aimed at music lovers seeking a compact and versatile integrated amplifier, capable of serving as the heart of a simple stereo system, without adding further links to the chain.

What to check before buying used
The Alps volume potentiometer and input relays can develop crackling or a dead spot after many years of use: testing at every position, including at the extremes, is essential before purchase. Also check that the DIN sockets lock securely, as these are more fragile than the RCA ones on this model, and that there is no hum at idle, which can indicate ageing power supply capacitors. The on/standby toggle switch, used at every listening session, also deserves a check for firmness.
