Description
The NAP 250 is a stereo power amplifier from Naim Audio, operating in Class A/B. It is installed downstream of a preamplifier or a source fitted with a line output, its role being to directly power a pair of speakers. Its aluminium chassis houses a toroidal transformer and a DR (Discrete Regulator) power supply, a technology originally developed for the brand's Statement amplifier.
The power section is built around eight Naim NA009 transistors, distributed between the power supply and output stages, together with a triple-transistor constant current source (CCS). The result is 2 x 100 W into 8 ohms and 2 x 190 W into 4 ohms, with a frequency response of 14 Hz to 100 kHz (-3 dB) and a harmonic distortion rate of 0.013%. A gain of +29 dB and an input signal required for clipping of 1 VRMS determine the unit's sensitivity, while a signal-to-noise ratio of 111 dB and crosstalk of 60 dB indicate the cleanliness of the reproduced signal. An eddy current separator, placed between the speaker outputs, completes this architecture to limit interaction between the two channels.
The unit features a balanced XLR stereo input, a Remote input and output for chaining with other Naim components, as well as screw-type speaker terminals. Automatic or manual standby is also provided.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a hi-fi system already built around a separate preamplifier, in a setup where the user is seeking a power reserve capable of driving demanding speakers, including those with low impedance. The jump to 2 x 190 W into 4 ohms indicates the unit's good ability to handle speakers that are harder to drive.

What to check before buying used
On an older unit, have the DR power supply capacitors and the NA009 transistors in the output stages checked, as their ageing can reduce the power output or generate hiss. Also check the condition of the toroidal transformer and confirm there is no hum on start-up, along with the tightness of the Naim DIN connectors at the rear. Realignment or reconditioning by a Naim-approved technician is sometimes required after several years of use.
