Description
The Uniti Atom Headphone Edition is the variant in Naim Audio's Uniti range entirely dedicated to headphone listening. It combines a network source, a digital-to-analogue converter and a headphone amplification stage in a single chassis, making it possible to build a complete listening system without an amplifier or speakers. A stereo RCA pre-out remains available, however, for connecting a power amplifier or active speakers should the setup evolve.
The amplification is analogue and operates in class AB, a topology choice that favours linearity over efficiency, and the digital signal is processed by a Texas Instruments 24-bit / 192 kHz DAC. WAV, FLAC, AIFF and ALAC files are supported up to 24-bit / 384 kHz, compressed formats MP3, AAC, OGG and WMA up to 48 kHz, and DSD is handled at 64 and 128 Fs. Headphones can be connected via three standards: 4-pin balanced XLR, 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn and 6.35 mm jack, covering both original single-ended cables and aftermarket balanced cables.
On the source side, the unit combines wireless links and wired connectivity:
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth apt-X HD, AirPlay 2, Google Cast Audio, DLNA and Spotify Connect, controlled via the Naim app on Android and iOS
- Two optical Toslink inputs, one coaxial S/PDIF input, two USB type A ports, one RCA analogue input and one RJ45 Ethernet port
- Remote control included
This model is aimed at the listener who mainly listens via headphones and wants a single source, with a compact footprint of 245 x 95 x 265 mm for 7 kg, rather than a stack of separate DAC, streamer and headphone amplifier. Its balanced outputs and broad format compatibility suit demanding headphones and high-resolution music libraries, both locally and over a network.

What to check before buying used
On an appliance of this type, the first thing to check is the condition of the three headphone sockets: the 6.35 mm jack and the 4.4 mm Pentaconn socket suffer from repeated plugging, with loose contacts or a channel dropping out depending on the angle of the plug. Next, check that the potentiometer and volume encoder show no crackling or value jumps, and that the screen and dial respond correctly. Finally, connect the unit to the network to confirm that the firmware can be updated and that streaming services are properly recognised by the app, as a unit left offline for a long time may require a software update. Also check the chassis's natural ventilation, as class AB amplification runs warm by nature.
