Description
The PSB Alpha B1 is a 2-way bass-reflex bookshelf speaker, designed by the Canadian manufacturer PSB. Compact, it can be positioned on stands or on a shelf and aims for a balanced sound reproduction without requiring a large listening space.
The 13 cm woofer with metallised polypropylene cone handles bass and midrange reproduction, while the 19 mm aluminium dome tweeter, ferrofluid-cooled, takes over from 3 kHz thanks to a 3rd-order filter. This ferrofluid cooling allows the tweeter to dissipate heat more effectively, which contributes to its power handling and sound stability at high frequencies. With a sensitivity of 89 dB and an impedance of 6 Ω (4 Ω minimum), the speaker is satisfied with a modest power amplifier, between 15 and 80 W depending on the source. Its frequency response extends from 65 Hz to 21 kHz (± 3 dB), a range consistent with the size of the woofer.

What to check before buying used
On this bookshelf speaker, the surround of the polypropylene woofer must remain supple and free of cracks: sagging or hardening of the edge affects bass reproduction. The aluminium tweeter dome, exposed on the front baffle, scratches or deforms easily when stored without a protective grille. Also check the condition of the cabinet (Sienna veneer) at the corners and the bass-reflex ports at the rear, whose internal foam may have come away over time.
