Description
The PSB Alpha T1 is a two-way floorstanding speaker operating in bass-reflex loading. Designed to stand on the floor, it forms a complete hi-fi floorstanding speaker intended to equip a stereo or home cinema system without going through a compact stand-mounted speaker.
Its distinctive feature lies in the arrangement of its drivers: two 13 cm woofer-midranges with polypropylene diaphragms flank a 19 mm aluminium dome tweeter, in what is known as an Appolito configuration. This symmetrical layout aims to improve sound coherence when listening slightly off the central axis of the speakers, a worthwhile advantage in a living room where one is not always exactly in the ideal listening position. The tweeter is ferrofluid-cooled, a technique that helps dissipate heat and preserve power handling in the treble. The crossover frequency between the two ways is set at 3 kHz. With a sensitivity of 89 dB and an impedance of 8 Ω (6 Ω minimum), the floorstanding speaker can be paired with amplifiers of modest power, the recommended power ranging from 15 to 120 W. The stated frequency response runs from 55 Hz to 21 kHz.
This speaker is aimed at a listener wishing to move on from a compact system to a genuine floorstanding speaker, without aiming for costly high-end equipment. What to check before buying used
After several years, the surrounds of the two 13 cm woofer-midranges deserve close inspection: excessive softness or, conversely, hardening of the foam or rubber indicates ageing that affects the bass. It is also worth checking the cabinet of each speaker (impacts, chips in the black finish, rear panel and bass-reflex port), as well as the secure mounting of both speakers, as unstable footing or loose screws can generate unwanted vibrations. A listening check across the full range, including around the 3 kHz crossover, helps identify a dried-out ferrofluid tweeter or a damaged woofer-midrange.
