Description
The Real Cable CNUG2 is a digital audio signal converter designed to bridge an optical output and a coaxial input, or vice versa. It is aimed at owners of devices whose digital connections do not match, typically a player fitted with only an optical output while the amplifier only accepts coaxial, or the other way round.
Its main function is to ensure compatibility with common digital audio formats: PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS. This support means the converter passes through both a simple stereo audio stream and an encoded multichannel stream, without degrading or altering the information contained in the digital signal.
The CNUG2 naturally finds its place behind a DVD player, a CD player or a digital TV receiver whose output does not match the input available on the amplifier or home cinema receiver. It thus allows the connection of devices that, without this conversion, would remain digitally incompatible with one another.
What to check before buying used
The unit works on an all-or-nothing basis: a conversion issue shows up as a complete absence of sound rather than a gradual degradation, which makes testing by ear immediate but without nuance. Systematically check both connectors, optical (Toslink) and coaxial (RCA), as a dirty or slightly misaligned port is enough to cut the digital stream. The small mains adapter or associated power supply, if it has one, is also worth checking, as this type of converter sometimes stops working due to incorrect voltage.
