Description
The A11 MKII is a stereo integrated amplifier from Rotel, designed to centralise an entire hi-fi system in a single unit. It combines a power section, a preamplifier with tone controls, a digital DAC and Bluetooth reception, allowing it to drive speakers directly without additional electronics, whether from a turntable or from digital sources.
The power section delivers 2x50 W RMS into 8 Ω, with total harmonic distortion below 0.03% between 20 Hz and 20 kHz and a damping factor of 140, reflecting precise control over loudspeakers, including demanding speaker loads, as the unit remains stable down to 4 Ω minimum. Frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 100 kHz on line input and from 20 Hz to 20 kHz on phono input, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB on line and 85 dB on phono, ensuring a clean background across both types of sources.
The built-in phono stage accepts a moving magnet (MM) cartridge, with an input sensitivity of 2.3 mV and an impedance of 47 kΩ, while the RCA line inputs show a sensitivity of 180 mV. The Texas Instruments 32-bit / 384 kHz DAC processes digital streams received via the optical and coaxial inputs, and Bluetooth aptX HD provides a wireless link for mobile sources. The unit also features a headphone amplifier, an RCA pre-out output and two 12V trigger switches to control other components in the system.
This model is aimed at those wishing to build a compact yet complete stereo setup, capable of accepting a turntable as well as a network player, a TV via the optical input or a smartphone over Bluetooth. What to check before buying used
The volume potentiometer should be tested across its full range to detect any crackling caused by oxidation of the tracks, as should the source switches and tone controls. The power supply capacitors, stressed by the power section, can lose capacitance over time and cause humming or a loss of dynamics. The MM phono stage should also be checked for proper operation, as it is more sensitive to interference and wear than the line inputs, along with the condition of the RCA connectors and the front-panel headphone output.
