Description
The Rotel A14 is a stereo integrated amplifier designed to centralise the sources of a modern hi-fi system, whether digital or analogue. It brings together the power stage, digital-to-analogue conversion and several inputs in a single unit, making it a central hub capable of driving a pair of speakers directly.
The amplification section delivers 2 × 80 W into an 8 Ω load, sufficient power to drive bookshelf speakers or floorstanding speakers of typical sensitivity in a medium-sized living room. Digital conversion relies on a 32-bit / 768 kHz AKM DAC, compatible with both PCM and DSD streams, allowing the full benefit of high-resolution audio files sent from a computer or digital source. Bluetooth aptX adds high-quality wireless streaming from a smartphone or tablet, complemented by a front-panel USB socket for a direct wired connection.
These varied inputs allow the connection of a network player, a computer, a turntable fitted with a Moving Magnet cartridge, or other conventional hi-fi equipment, without the need for an external preamplifier.

What to check before buying used
The motorised volume potentiometer may develop crackling at the start of its travel after many years of use, a point worth checking across the full adjustment range. The output protection relays and the slit-foil capacitors in the power supply are also worth checking, as they affect long-term power handling. Each input (front-panel USB, RCA, MM phono) as well as Bluetooth aptX should also be tested to rule out any loose contact or malfunction.
