Description
The Rotel A14 MKII is a stereo integrated amplifier that centralises all the sources of a hi-fi system: analogue and digital inputs, PC-USB compatible with MQA, Bluetooth aptX and AAC, as well as a moving magnet phono stage dedicated to vinyl enthusiasts. It is the flagship model of Rotel's 14 series and stands as a central component capable of driving speakers directly without going through a separate power amplifier.
The unit delivers 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 150 watts into 4 ohms, in class AB, thanks to an oversized toroidal transformer manufactured in-house by Rotel and four high-capacity slit-foil capacitors. Total harmonic distortion remains below 0.018% and intermodulation distortion below 0.03%, two figures that reflect clean sound reproduction even at high volume. The damping factor of 220 indicates good control of the amplifier over the speakers, particularly in the bass. Digital-to-analogue conversion relies on a fully redesigned Texas Instruments 32-bit/384 kHz circuit, with manually selected components for the audio section.
Tone controls allow treble and bass to be adjusted in 1 dB steps up to ±10 dB, with a Bypass mode that removes these circuits from the signal path when the most direct listening experience is desired. The unit is Roon Tested certified and offers home automation integration via Ethernet, RS232, 12-volt trigger and infrared remote control. The dual five-way speaker terminals allow for a zone 2 installation, with relay-controlled selection of outputs A and B.

What to check before buying used
On this type of integrated amplifier, the volume potentiometer deserves careful listening at low levels: crackling or an imbalance between channels often indicates a dirty track. The slit-foil capacitors and toroidal transformer generally age well, but an audible hum or excessive heat after a few minutes of use should raise concern. Also check that the phono stage and digital inputs work properly, along with the condition of the USB and Bluetooth connectors, which can sometimes be weakened by repeated plugging in.
