Rotel Michi M8

The Michi M8 is a monophonic class AB power amplifier from Rotel, designed to be used in pairs so as to power each speaker of a stereo installation with a dedicated channel. This monoblock format is aimed at high-end systems where each speaker benefits from its own power source, with no resources shared between channels.

In terms of performance, the M8 delivers a continuous power output of 1800W into 4Ω, with total harmonic distortion below 0.018%, a level that reflects clean reproduction even at high power. Its frequency response extends from 10Hz to 100kHz (+0dB, -0.5dB), a wide range that comfortably exceeds the audible spectrum and ensures margin at the extremes of the signal. The balanced input gain (XLR) is 30dB, suited to integration with a preamplifier equipped with balanced outputs.

This type of amplifier is aimed at high-end installations seeking to get the most out of speakers that are demanding in terms of current and load, particularly those dropping to 4Ω. When buying used, it is worth checking the condition of the toroidal transformers and internal capacitors, key elements in bass reproduction and load handling under heavy demand. A check of the proper operation of the output transistors and the absence of noise or hum at start-up is recommended, as is checking the speaker connection terminals and the XLR and RCA inputs, which are regularly used during successive connections.

The M8 also stands out for its connectivity geared towards home automation or multi-room integration, with RS232 and Ethernet links, as well as a front-panel control display showing a peak power indicator and a spectrum analyser, useful for monitoring the amplifier's behaviour during operation.
