Description
The Michi S5 is a stereo power amplifier from Rotel, designed to drive a pair of speakers with a substantial power reserve. It is a linear amplifier operating in class AB, engineered to faithfully reproduce the nuances of an audio signal without incorporating preamplification functions.
Its architecture is built around a dual monophonic power design, with each channel featuring its own 2,200 VA toroidal transformer, housed in a separate epoxy-filled compartment to limit noise and vibration. This design allows it to deliver 500 watts per channel into 8 ohms and up to 800 watts into 4 ohms, with total harmonic distortion below 0.008% and a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 dB, ensuring a clean signal even at high output levels. A bank of four large-capacity capacitors, totalling 18,000 µF, combined with 32 output transistors, contributes to rhythmic control and command over low frequencies under demanding load conditions. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 100 kHz.
The amplifier features a colour display on the front panel, rhodium-plated high-capacity binding posts designed by Michi, as well as Ethernet and RS232 ports enabling integration into a system controlled by a centralised control system. A remote control is supplied for everyday use.

What to check before buying used
On an amplifier of this power output, the large filter capacitors and output transistors are the components most heavily stressed over time: testing at high volume allows you to check for the absence of hiss, hum or unusual distortion. The rhodium-plated binding posts and XLR/RCA connectors are worth a visual inspection to rule out any play or signs of oxidation. It is also worth checking that the front-panel colour display and the Ethernet and RS232 ports function correctly if the unit is to be integrated into a centralised control system.
