Description
The Technics SL-1200 MK7 is a direct-drive turntable, heir to a lineage that has set the benchmark in the world of DJing and analogue listening. It is supplied without a cartridge, leaving the user free to fit one according to their needs. Compatible with 33, 45 and 78 rpm speeds, it is suited both to playing modern records and older pressings.
Its direct-drive motor is built around a coreless stator: by removing the iron core traditionally found in this type of motor, Technics eliminated the cogging effect, those rotational irregularities that could undermine playback fidelity on older direct-drive turntables. The magnetic force of the rotor magnets has been optimised to restore high torque, comparable to that of the SL-1200MK5, ensuring stable rotation from start-up: just 0.7 seconds are needed to reach 33 rpm. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.025% WRMS, an indicator of the platter's rotational stability.
The tonearm adopts the statically balanced S shape, a classic in DJ equipment recognised for its reliability. Its high-precision bearings give it greater sensitivity to initial movement than the SL-1200MK6, improving groove tracking and limiting stylus bounce, even during demanding manipulations such as scratching. The tonearm is made from gold anodised aluminium, with adjustments covering a VTA of 0 to 6 mm, an overhang of 15 mm, an offset angle of 22° and a tracking force of 0 to 4 g.
This turntable is aimed at DJs looking for a reliable base for mixing and scratching, as well as analogue listening enthusiasts wanting a robust and versatile turntable. Reverse playback, dual pitch adjustment (±8% and ±16%), an electronic brake and adjustable LED colour make it a tool suited to both performance use and home listening setups. The die-cast aluminium platter covered in rubber and the rigid anti-vibration chassis, set on absorbent silicone insulator feet, contribute to the mechanical stability of the whole unit.

What to check before buying used
As the cartridge is not included, please check that a compatible model (5.6 to 20.7 g including headshell) is supplied with the turntable, along with the condition of its stylus. Test the tonearm lock and its return to the rest position, the smoothness of the ±8%/±16% pitch control, and check for any play in the pivot. A platter that takes noticeably longer than 0.7 seconds to reach speed may indicate wear in the direct-drive motor.
