Description
The Technics SL-1200GR2 is a direct-drive turntable, inheriting technologies developed for the SL-1200G. It is aimed at analogue listening enthusiasts seeking a stable and precise turntable base, whether for a domestic hi-fi system or more demanding use.
The coreless direct-drive motor, combined with high-precision motor control, limits rotational irregularities linked to magnetic friction. This design results in wow and flutter measured at 0.025% WRMS, an indicator of speed stability during playback. The 0.7-second start-up time at 33 rpm allows the nominal playback speed to be reached quickly. Speed adjustment operates over two ranges, ±8% and ±16%, offering scope for adjustment for DJ use or critical listening.
The platter, made from aluminium, rubber and brass, aims to reduce vibrations transmitted to the cartridge. It sits on an aluminium and BMC chassis, finished in brushed aluminium, itself isolated by absorbent silicone feet. The tonearm, S-shaped and made of aluminium, is described as high sensitivity. An electronic brake, a dust cover and a 45 rpm centre adaptor complete the set.

What to check before buying used
The original or replacement cartridge should be checked: worn or misaligned stylus, and cantilever suspension sometimes hardened over time. Check the turntable while rotating at different speeds to detect a noisy motor bearing or platter instability, as well as the correct return of the tonearm to its rest. The silicone feet and the brushed aluminium finish of the chassis may show marks or slight compression depending on previous use.
