Description
The Technics SL-1210 MK7 is a direct-drive turntable intended for DJ use, compatible with speeds of 33, 45 and 78 rpm. It is supplied without a cartridge and is built on a rigid chassis designed to limit unwanted vibrations during playback.
The direct-drive motor of this model uses a coreless stator: by removing the iron core, Technics eliminates cogging, the rotational irregularities that affected older direct-drive systems. The magnetic force of the rotor magnets has been optimised, as have the gaps between stator and rotor magnets, to restore torque equivalent to that of the SL-1210MK5. The tonearm retains the statically balanced S-shape, with high-precision bearings offering greater sensitivity to initial movement than the MK6, which improves groove tracking and reduces stylus skipping when scratching. The turntable offers a speed adjustment of ±8% or ±16%, a wow and flutter of 0.025% WRMS, a start-up time of 0.7 seconds at 33 rpm, as well as an electronic brake and a reverse playback function.

What to check before buying used
On this direct-drive turntable, check the platter's rotational consistency and listen for any noise or jerking at start-up, which would indicate wear on the coreless motor. Check that the S-shaped tonearm works properly: smooth movement, no play in the bearings, and that the VTA setting and tracking force hold correctly. As the unit is supplied without a cartridge, test the audio output with a cartridge fitted to confirm that the headshell and tonearm wiring are intact. Finally, check the speed adjustment and pitch to make sure the sliders respond correctly across their full range.
