The SL-1210GR2 is a direct-drive turntable designed by Technics, a technical successor to the SL-1200G with several elements revised. It is aimed at listeners seeking stable, precise playback of analogue records, without going through belt transmission.
Its coreless direct-drive motor, combined with a high-precision motor control, limits the magnetic cogging effect responsible for rotational irregularities. This architecture results in wow and flutter measured at 0.025% WRMS, ensuring a stable rotational speed over time, and a start-up time of 0.7 seconds at 33 rpm, appreciable for mixing or reactive listening use. The signal-to-noise ratio of 78 dB contributes to a well-controlled noise floor. Speed adjustment is carried out over two ranges, ±8% and ±16%, for fine-tuning of playback tempo.
The platter, made from aluminium, rubber and brass, offers a rigidity intended to limit parasitic vibrations. The S-shaped tonearm, in aluminium, is stated to be high-sensitivity in order to faithfully follow the groove. The chassis combines aluminium, BMC and rubber, with a brushed aluminium finish, and rests on insulating feet made of vibration-absorbing silicone designed to decouple the turntable from external vibrations. An electronic brake, a dust cover and a 45 rpm adaptor complete the set.

What to check before buying used
The original cartridge, or the one fitted by the previous owner, should be checked for wear, as the stylet directly affects groove playback quality. Also check the tonearm's flexibility and that there is no play in its bearing, as well as that the platter engages correctly on the direct-drive motor spindle. Testing at different speeds confirms that the ±8%/±16% adjustment responds correctly and that the start-up time remains as expected.
