Description
The Denton 85TH is a 2-way bookshelf speaker from Wharfedale, designed in the spirit of the British manufacturer's classic shelf models. Its mahogany finish is hand-veneered by the brand's cabinet makers, with a recessed front baffle and a tungsten-coloured cloth grille reminiscent of the range's historic models.
Behind this traditional appearance, the speaker features more recent technologies. The woofer uses a woven Kevlar cone mounted on a rigid die-cast chassis, a combination designed to deliver detailed bass and midrange with good dynamic control. The treble is handled by a soft woven textile dome tweeter, paired with a high-flux ferrite magnet for progressive high-frequency extension. The crossover linking the two drivers aims for as seamless a transition as possible between the two ways.
With a recommended amplifier power of 20 to 120 W and a nominal impedance of 4 Ω, this speaker suits an amplifier capable of delivering comfortable current into a low-impedance load. Its compact size and 3 kg weight make it a model suited to stand or cabinet placement, in a living room or a modestly sized listening room, for a listener drawn to traditional aesthetics as much as sound quality.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking the condition of the mahogany veneer, which is sensitive to knocks and moisture marks, as well as the state of the tungsten-coloured cloth grille, which can sag or discolour over time. Checking the condition of the woven Kevlar cone and the tweeter dome is also recommended, as these components may show deformation, cracks or dents after several years of use. It is useful to listen to the speaker at moderate and then higher volume to detect any unwanted noise or loss of bass definition, which would indicate a worn suspension.
