Description

The Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 is a compact 2-way bookshelf speaker, designed to reproduce detailed hi-fi sound in a reduced format suited to small listening spaces. It draws on the same design principles as the larger models in the Diamond range, with a focus on sonic versatility.

The 130 mm Klarity bass-midrange driver handles bass and midrange reproduction, while the 25 mm woven textile dome tweeter takes care of the high frequencies. The stated frequency range extends from 65 Hz to 20 kHz, with a sensitivity of 88 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, allowing it to be paired with amplifiers of a recommended power between 20 and 100 W. The bass-reflex port is located at the rear of the cabinet, a point to consider when positioning it close to a wall.

With dimensions of 250 x 180 x 312 mm and a weight of 6.8 kg per unit, this speaker suits a compact stereo setup, on a cabinet or stand, for everyday music listening in a living room or small office. Its moderate recommended power makes it compatible with many entry-level and mid-range amplifiers.

What to check before buying used

Listen to each speaker separately to detect any rubbing noise or distortion from the Klarity bass-midrange driver, often the first sign of worn suspensions. Inspect the textile tweeter dome, which is prone to dents if handled without a protective grille. Also check the condition of the cabinet and its corners, as well as the fixing of the rear bass-reflex port, which can sometimes come loose after transport.
