Description
The YBA A650 is a power amplifier designed to complement a preamplifier within a separates-based hi-fi system. Its function is to provide the pure amplification stage, downstream of a preamplifier that handles source selection and volume control.
Its front panel adopts a clean design, with no visible display disrupting the aesthetics of the fascia. The power switch itself is discreetly placed under the left-hand side of the front panel, rather than on the fascia. The unit can operate in bridged mode: it then delivers 600 W into 8 Ohms, compared with 200 W into 8 Ohms in standard stereo configuration.
In terms of connectivity, the A650 offers RCA inputs, stereo balanced inputs and a balanced mono input, complemented by two pairs of speaker outputs. This range of connections allows it to be integrated into a variety of configurations, including bi-amping set-ups thanks to the duplicated outputs.
This type of power amplifier is aimed at a user who already has a separate preamplifier and is looking for a power stage capable of scaling up as needed, particularly in bridged mode for more demanding speakers or larger listening rooms.
What to check before buying used
On this power stage, test the stereo/bridged switch and check that both channels deliver symmetrical power, with no hum or distortion at low volume. Inspect the RCA and balanced connectors as well as the speaker output terminals, whose contact can wear from repeated tightening. It is advisable to check for silence at power-up and the absence of any abnormal heating of the heatsink after a few dozen minutes of listening, as the output stage capacitors can degrade with age.
