The Genesis PH1 is a phono preamplifier from YBA. Where an amplifier or modern integrated amplifier lacks a phono input, this unit sits between the turntable and the amplification source: it raises the output level of the cartridge and corrects its frequency response, an essential step in correctly reproducing the signal from a moving magnet (MM) or moving coil (MC) cartridge.
On the front panel, the selector offers only two positions, MM or MC, although the PH1 also accepts high-output MC cartridges. The circuit automatically detects the type of cartridge connected and adjusts its settings accordingly. However, a switch on the rear panel allows you to specify whether the MC cartridge used is a standard MC or a high-output MC (High MC), so that the circuit applies the correct setting.
A distinctive feature of this preamplifier is that its power supply relies on ten NCR18650 batteries, recharged via a 24V mains adapter. This adapter can be left plugged in and powered permanently: the battery then recharges automatically as soon as its level drops during listening. It can be unplugged, but the charge level shown on the front panel must then be monitored to avoid a complete discharge.

What to check before buying used
Open the rear compartment to check the condition of the ten NCR18650 cells: worn batteries result in reduced runtime between charges, or even drops in sound level during listening. Test the MM/MC selector as well as the standard MC/High MC switch on the rear panel, whose contacts can oxidise over time. Also check that the original 24V mains adapter is present, as its absence makes recharging the preamplifier difficult.
