Description
The PH100 is a dedicated phono preamplifier, designed by YBA to meet the demand of many users wishing to add a phono stage to their system, at a time when most modern preamplifiers no longer offer one as standard. It is a separate unit, to be connected between a turntable and a preamplifier or amplifier lacking a phono input.
In terms of design, YBA chose a narrow but deep format, of standard depth, rather than a wide, shallow chassis. This choice addresses a practical problem: when a phono stage is placed near the back of an amplifier, the weight of the cables connected to it can mechanically destabilise the unit. The shape chosen for the PH100 aims to limit this risk.
The PH100 works equally well with moving magnet (MM) cartridges and moving coil (MC) cartridges. On the front panel, a selector offers only these two positions, MM or MC. Once the correct selection has been made by the user, the unit is able to automatically detect the type of cartridge actually in use and adjust its settings accordingly. For moving coil cartridges, the unit relies on a moving coil transformer designed by YBA, intended to accommodate the various characteristics of this type of cartridge.
This preamplifier is aimed at turntable enthusiasts with an amplifier or preamplifier lacking a phono input, or who wish to have a dedicated phono stage capable of handling either an MM or MC cartridge, without multiplying the number of units.
What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking that the MM/MC selector on the front panel works correctly, as well as the reliability of the automatic cartridge type detection, which relies on internal circuits that can degrade over time. It is also worth checking the condition of the input and output connections, as well as listening for any background noise or hum, as this type of unit amplifies a particularly weak signal and is therefore sensitive to component or earthing faults.
